ICEVI WA & SENSE INDIA NATIONAL CONFERENCE 2017
[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The ICEVI West Asia and the Sense International India, both leading organizations in the field of visual impairment and deafblindness organized a National Conference during 8-10 December, 2017 at Ahmedabad Management Association, Ahmedabad. The 1st ICEVI Asian Conference with the Theme of “Reaching the Unreached” was hosted by the Blind People’s Association at Ahmedabad in India from 9-11 January, 1995. This has been followed by 5 Conferences due to the demand of people from Western Asia for hosting such conferences.
INAUGURATION: The Conference was inaugurated by Shri Kamleshkumar Pandey, the Chief Commissioner of Persons with Disability, Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, Government of India at 9.30 a.m. on Friday 8th December, 2017 at J.B. Auditorium of (AMA), Ahmedabad. Lord Low of Dalston (Colin Low), Former President of ICEVI set the tone for the Conference by his Keynote Address in the inaugural function. The officials of ICEVI namely Dr. M.N.G. Mani, CEO, Mrs. Nandini Rawal, Treasurer; Dr. Bhushan Punani, Chairperson, West Asia remained present throughout the conference as also the General Secretary of BPA Mrs. Nandini P Munshaw; Secretary Mr. F.J. Porwal; Treasurer, Ms. Sunita Thakar and President of ATCB Trust Mrs. Usha Atulkumar. and the officials of the Sense International India included Mr. Murray Culshaw, Chair, Mr. Akhil Paul, Director.
SENSE INDIA: JAGDISH K. PATEL AWARD: This Conference also conferred posthumous Award on Shri Arunbhai Doshi for his outstanding contribution for improving the quality of education and rehabilitative services for persons who are deafblind. The Late Jagdishbhai Patel was a Visionary who started numerous Institutions in Gujarat and helped the entire state to develop. Mr. Patel was blind and in later age became deaf. Inspite of his multiple disability, his dynamism and intelligence remained undiminished. In his memory, the Sense India: Jagdish K. Patel Award has been set up. This Award function was held along with an entertainment programme at the BPA campus at 7.00 p.m. on 8th December, 2017. The family of Shri Arunbhai was present to receive this Award at the hands of Respected Parampoojya Bhaishree Nalinbhai Kothari, a Spiritual Leader of Rajsaubhag Ashram, Sayla.
VALEDICTORY PROGRAMME: Mr. Kamal Dayani, Principal Secretary, Department of Social Justice & Empowerment graced the Valedictory Function as Chief Guest. Mr. Richard Hawkes, Former C.E.O. Sense International who was instrumental in setting up Sense India which works for Deafblind people come specially from the UK to speak about the origin of Sense India and the achievements over 20 years. This Function was held at 4.00 p.m on Sunday, 10th December, 2017 at J.B.
